Glashütte
German Precision
Portrait
Ferdinand Lange founded watchmaking here in 1845 with state help for a poor mining region; the industry was nationalised after 1945 and the brands vanished, then were refounded after 1990 by descendants and former employees. Around ten manufacturers now work in a village of six thousand, and German law restricts the Glashütte name to watches largely made here.
