La Chaux-de-Fonds
The Watchmaking Grid
Portrait
Fire destroyed La Chaux-de-Fonds in 1794 and it was rebuilt on a strict grid with wide parallel streets aligned so that every workshop got north light — Marx called it a single huge factory town. Le Corbusier was born here and built his first houses in the town, and UNESCO listed the plan itself rather than any building.
