Sheffield

City of Steel

Portrait

Harry Brearley was trying to find a gun-barrel alloy that resisted erosion in 1913 when he noticed that a rejected sample had not rusted in the scrap heap — stainless steel followed, and Sheffield cutlery followed that. The city sits between five rivers that powered the grinding wheels, and a third of it lies inside the Peak District national park.
