Portrait

Yekaterinburg was founded as an ironworks and became the centre of Ural metallurgy and gem-cutting — malachite from these mountains lines rooms in the Hermitage. The last tsar and his family were killed in a cellar here in 1918, and a cathedral now stands on the site; the city also produced Soviet rock and a constructivist quarter from the 1930s.
