Where Stones Are Cut
Portrait
Agate was mined here from the fifteenth century and cut on water-powered sandstone wheels, with cutters lying face-down for hours; when the local deposits ran out in the nineteenth century, emigrants to Brazil began shipping raw stones back, and the town survives as a cutting and trading centre. A church is built into a cave in the cliff above the main street.
