Andrea Amati built the first instruments recognisable as violins here in the 1550s, Stradivari made around a thousand in the same streets, and the craft is now taught in a school that draws students from forty countries. A Stradivarius is played daily at the Museo del Violino, then find a workshop where a maker will show you a scroll being cut.
