Sirmione
Catullus' Spa
Portrait
A peninsula runs four kilometres into Lake Garda, and at its tip stand the Grotte di Catullo — a Roman villa of the first century, named for the poet whose family may have owned land here and who wrote about coming home to Sirmio. A sulphur spring rises from the lake bed at seventy degrees and has supplied the town's baths since 1889.
