The hats were woven in Ecuador from toquilla straw and shipped through Panama, where gold rush travellers bought them and gave them the wrong name — Roosevelt wore one visiting the canal in 1906 and settled the misnomer permanently. The finest are woven in the highlands over months and can hold water; Cuenca's colonial centre is a UNESCO site.
