Pforzheim
The Goldsmiths' City
Portrait
A margrave founded a jewellery and watch industry here in 1767, and by 1900 Pforzheim made most of Germany's jewellery. On 23 February 1945 a bombing raid destroyed the city in twenty-two minutes and killed around a third of the population — one of the highest proportions of any raid in the war — and the industry was rebuilt afterwards from almost nothing.
