Portrait

Rothenburg stopped growing after the Thirty Years' War left it bankrupt, which is why the walls and the timber houses survived intact; in March 1945 an American assistant secretary of war who knew the town ordered artillery held back, and the local commander surrendered against orders rather than see it destroyed. Walk the covered wall walk at dawn, before the tour buses.
