Portrait

German settlers invited by the Hungarian kings in the twelfth century built nine guild towers and a clock tower here, and the citadel remains inhabited rather than preserved — one of the few in Europe where people still live inside the walls. Vlad III, the historical Dracula, was born in a house on the main square in 1431.
