Naarden

The Star on the Map

Portrait

Naarden was rebuilt after a 1572 massacre as a double-walled star fort with six bastions and two moats, and the geometry is legible only from above — which is why it appears in every Dutch aerial photograph. Comenius, the Czech educational reformer, is buried in the church, and the fortress museum runs through the casemates.
