Karl Benz and Gottlieb Daimler both built their first vehicles in this region, and Mercedes and Porsche keep museums a few kilometres apart — the Mercedes building spirals downward through 130 years in one continuous ramp. The city sits in a basin with vineyards on the slopes inside the boundary, which is unusual for an industrial capital.
