Mystras

Mystras was the seat of the Despotate of the Morea and the last centre of Byzantine learning before 1453; its churches keep late Byzantine fresco cycles that survived because the town emptied slowly rather than burning. Enter from the upper gate and walk down through the palace, the monasteries and the ruined mansions to Sparta's plain below.
