Naoussa / Paros

The quarries inland supplied the marble of the Hermes of Praxiteles and much of what Athens built in its best century, cut from tunnels by lamplight, which is where the stone's old name lychnites comes from. The harbour at Naoussa keeps a half-sunk Venetian fort at its mouth and a fishing fleet that still unloads onto the same quay the tavernas use.
