Naxos Town
The Unfinished Gate
Portrait
The Portara is a marble doorframe some six metres high on the islet facing the town, all that was built of a temple to Apollo begun around 530 BC and abandoned when the tyrant who ordered it fell. Everything else on the site was carried off for other buildings; the frame survived because it was too heavy to move, which is the usual reason such things survive.
