The sanctuary of Zeus held games from 776 BC until a Christian emperor ended them in AD 393, and the workshop where Phidias built the forty-metre gold-and-ivory statue was identified by a cup with his name on it. Walk through the arch into the stadium and along the original stone starting line — the track is bare grass, and that plainness is the point.
