Tikal
Temples above the Canopy
Gateway town: Flores
Portrait
Tikal held perhaps sixty thousand people and dominated the Maya lowlands for six centuries before collapse around 900; the jungle closed over it so completely that the temples were mapped only in the 1950s. Stay inside the park and be at Temple IV before dawn: howler monkeys start in the dark, and the pyramids emerge from the canopy as the mist lifts.
