The Golden Temple stands in the middle of a sacred pool with entrances on all four sides, a deliberate statement that it is open to everyone, and its langar serves free meals to as many as a hundred thousand people daily, cooked and washed up by volunteers. Cover your head, leave your shoes, eat in the hall on the floor with everyone else, and come back after dark when the gold is on the water.
