Burgos was the capital of Castile and its cathedral, begun in 1221, took three centuries and shows every phase of Spanish Gothic in one building — including a star vault over the crossing that Philip II said was the work of angels. El Cid and his wife lie beneath it, moved here in 1921 after seven centuries elsewhere.
