Pondicherry
French India
Portrait
Pondicherry was French from 1674 until 1954, and the town is still split by a canal — the White Town of colonnaded villas and street names in French on one side, the Tamil quarter of courtyard houses on the other. Sri Aurobindo's ashram occupies several buildings in the centre, and Auroville, an experimental township founded in 1968, is ten kilometres north.
