Shimla
The Viceroy's Summer
Portrait
From 1864 the entire government of British India moved to Shimla each summer — files, viceroy, army headquarters and all — travelling 1,700 kilometres to a ridge at 2,200 metres, an annual migration that lasted until 1939. The Viceregal Lodge still stands, and the narrow-gauge railway of 1903 crosses 864 bridges and 102 tunnels to reach the town.
