Ur

The Ziggurat of Ur
Lost Cities & RuinsSacred Cities
Gateway town: Nasiriyah
Portrait

Ur was a Sumerian port on the Euphrates when the river ran beside it, and Leonard Woolley's excavation in the 1920s found the royal tombs whose gold and lapis are now in London and Philadelphia. The ziggurat's lower stage stands restored to three storeys; the site sits beside an airbase in the desert, which is its own commentary on continuity.
