Barolo
The Wine of Kings
Portrait
Barolo was sweet until the 1840s, when the Marchesa di Barolo brought in a French oenologist to make it dry; the king bought the neighbouring estate, and the wine of kings got its name. Eleven communes share the appellation across the Langhe hills, and the difference between La Morra and Serralunga — soft and austere — is the argument the whole region has with itself.
