Boniface VIII sent for this water by name in the 1290s and Michelangelo called it the water that breaks the stone, having suffered kidney stones for years; both accounts are documented rather than local legend. The springs sit in the hills an hour east of Rome and the town that grew on them is a spa built entirely in the century after the railway arrived.
