Lipari / Aeolian Islands
Obsidian and Two Live Volcanoes
Portrait
The Aeolians are seven islands built by volcanoes that are still working: Stromboli has erupted every twenty minutes or so for two thousand years, and Vulcano gave its name to the phenomenon and then to the word. Lipari, the largest and the capital, traded obsidian across the Neolithic Mediterranean because the volcanic glass held an edge sharper than anything else available.
