Padua
The Anatomical Theatre
Portrait
Padua's anatomical theatre of 1594 is the oldest surviving, a steep wooden funnel where students stood in six tiers looking down at a table — Vesalius taught here by cutting rather than reciting Galen, which changed medicine. Galileo held the chair of mathematics for eighteen years and called them the best of his life; the botanical garden of 1545 is the world's oldest still in its original place.
