Kamakura

Kamakura was Japan's seat of government from 1185 to 1333, and the Zen schools that shaped samurai culture were established in its temples. The Great Buddha of 1252 sat inside a wooden hall until a tsunami swept it away in 1498; the bronze has sat in the open ever since, which is now the reason people photograph it.
