Kūkai founded the Shingon complex here in 816 and, according to the tradition, did not die in 835 but entered eternal meditation — monks still bring him meals twice a day. The Okunoin cemetery holds over two hundred thousand tombs along a two-kilometre path of cedars, and around fifty temples take overnight guests, who eat the vegetarian food and attend the morning service.
