Portrait
When Japan closed itself in 1639, one Dutch trading post on the artificial island of Dejima was left open, and for two centuries all Western science and goods entered the country through it. On 9 August 1945 the second atomic bomb was dropped on Nagasaki, killing perhaps seventy thousand people; the hypocentre park and the museum deal with it directly.
