Luang Prabang
The Morning Alms Round
Portrait
Luang Prabang was the royal capital of Laos until 1975 and holds over thirty working monasteries in a small peninsula between two rivers; at dawn several hundred monks walk the streets in silence to receive rice, a daily practice that predates tourism by centuries and that visitors are asked to watch from a distance if at all. The French colonial buildings sit among the temples.
