Vientiane

The Golden Stupa
Sacred CitiesHeritage Gems
Portrait

A Siamese army destroyed Vientiane in 1828 and carried its population away, leaving the city abandoned for decades; the golden That Luang stupa, first built in the third century and rebuilt in 1566, remains the national symbol and appears on the currency. The French rebuilt the town from the 1890s, which is why a Lao capital has a boulevard and an arch modelled on Paris.
