Vilnius was a centre of Jewish learning so important it was called the Jerusalem of the North — the Vilna Gaon taught here, and around ninety-five per cent of Lithuania's Jews were murdered in the Holocaust, most within the city and at Paneriai outside it. The old town, one of the largest baroque ensembles in eastern Europe, came through the war largely intact.
