Pokhara sits at 820 metres and Annapurna I stands at 8,091 — one of the steepest elevation gains over a short horizontal distance anywhere on earth, which is why the range appears to hang above the lake. It is the start of the Annapurna circuit and the base for paragliding, and Machapuchare, the fishtail peak, has never been officially climbed because it is sacred.
