Interlaken
Between the Lakes
Portrait
Interlaken sits on the strip between Lakes Thun and Brienz beneath the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau, and it exists as a resort because Byron, Goethe and Mendelssohn came in the early nineteenth century and wrote about it. The Jungfrau railway, finished in 1912 after sixteen years of tunnelling, still climbs to 3,454 metres — the highest station in Europe.
