William of Orange offered Leiden a choice after it withstood a Spanish siege in 1574 — exemption from taxes or a university — and the city chose the university, which became the intellectual centre of the Dutch Golden Age. Its botanical garden received the tulip bulbs that Clusius planted in 1593 and from which the entire Dutch trade descends.
