The Luftwaffe destroyed Rotterdam's medieval core in a single afternoon in May 1940, and the city chose not to reconstruct it — rebuilding instead as a modern port city, which is why it now holds the cube houses, the Erasmus bridge and the Markthal, and why it looks like nowhere else in the Netherlands. Europe's largest port runs forty kilometres to the sea.
