After the Turia flooded catastrophically in 1957, the river was diverted around Valencia and the empty bed became a park running nine kilometres through the middle of the city — gardens, sports pitches and, at one end, Calatrava's City of Arts and Sciences. The silk exchange of 1482, a Gothic hall with spiral columns, is where the medieval trade was done.
