Wrocław
City of a Hundred Bridges
Portrait
Wrocław spreads across islands in the Oder with over a hundred bridges, and the dwarfs — small bronze figures now numbering several hundred — commemorate the Orange Alternative, a movement that mocked the communist authorities in the 1980s by painting dwarfs over censored graffiti. The city was ninety per cent German until 1945 and was resettled almost entirely from Polish Lviv.
