Porto
Cellars on the Douro
Portrait
Port comes from the Douro valley a hundred kilometres inland, but by law it was aged and shipped from the lodges at Vila Nova de Gaia across the river, which is why the barcos rabelos are moored there and the names on the roofs are English — Taylor, Graham, Sandeman, from the eighteenth-century trade. The city itself is granite, azulejo and steep.
