Yaroslavl
Golden Ring on the Volga
Portrait
Yaroslavl's seventeenth-century merchants competed by building churches — the Church of Elijah the Prophet and St John the Baptist, with fifteen domes and every wall frescoed, were funded by fur and fish families rather than by the crown. Catherine the Great's 1763 plan of radiating streets was applied here and became the model for Russian provincial town planning.
