Ávila's wall has eighty-eight towers and nine gates and runs unbroken around the old town, the most complete medieval circuit in Spain, built from 1090 with Roman and Visigothic stones reused in the courses. Teresa of Ávila was born here in 1515, and the convents connected with her are the town's other subject.
