Davos grew as a sanatorium town because the dry cold air was prescribed for tuberculosis — Thomas Mann set The Magic Mountain here after visiting his wife in one. Antibiotics ended that trade, and since 1971 the World Economic Forum has filled the same hotels each January, which is the town's second life on the same altitude.
