Portrait

Sukhothai was founded in 1238 and its script, cast in stone by King Ramkhamhaeng in 1292, became the Thai alphabet; the seated and walking Buddha figures here set the style that Thailand has used ever since. Rent a bicycle at the gate — the historical park is flat, shaded and large, and the ponds hold the reflections that make the place.
