Durham cathedral was begun in 1093 to hold the body of St Cuthbert, and its masons used pointed ribbed vaults decades before Gothic architecture existed elsewhere — the building is the earliest large-scale demonstration of the technique that made Gothic possible. Bede is buried here too, and the castle beside it is now a university college.
