Pilgrims have walked to the tomb of St James since the ninth century, and the cathedral still swings the botafumeiro, a fifty-kilo censer that eight men haul across the transept at speed. Arrive on foot if you can, even for the last hundred kilometres; the point of Santiago is not the building but the state of everyone who reaches it.
