Stonehenge
The Standing Stones
Gateway town: Salisbury
Portrait
The bluestones came from the Preseli hills in Wales, some two hundred and forty kilometres west, and the sarsens were shaped with joints borrowed from carpentry — mortice and tenon in stone. Book the inner-circle access outside opening hours if you can; from the fence the monument looks small, and only from inside does the engineering register.
