The world's first boardwalk was laid here in 1870 at the suggestion of a hotelier tired of sand indoors, and the street names were used for the American Monopoly board in 1935. Casinos arrived in 1978 to revive a declining resort; several have since closed, and the town is an unusually clear case study in what gambling does and does not fix.
