San Remo's Liberty-style casino opened in 1905, and from 1951 the town has hosted the Festival della Canzone Italiana — the competition that inspired Eurovision and still stops the country for five evenings each February. The flower market supplies much of northern Europe, and Tchaikovsky wrote part of Eugene Onegin here.
