Ghent's weavers revolted against their counts so often that Charles V, born here, made the leaders parade with nooses round their necks in 1540 — the stroppendragers are still commemorated. The Van Eycks' Adoration of the Mystic Lamb, in Saint Bavo's, has been stolen or looted thirteen times, and one panel taken in 1934 has never been recovered.
